Winter Break Activities

Christmas and winter break are approaching quickly! Here is a list of camps and activities to keep you and the kiddos from going stir crazy while out of school. We hope you enjoy this time with family and friends!

 

Through Jan. 5

Edmond Ice Rink at Mitch Park (1501 W Covell Rd, Edmond) features skating, a Christmas train ride, holiday music and food concessions. $12 with skate rental, $8 without, kids (under 5), $6; train rides, $3. Winter Break hours: Monday – Thursday, 3 – 9 p.m.; Friday, 3 – 10 p.m.; Saturday, noon – 10 p.m.; Sunday, noon – 9 p.m. except on New Year’s Eve, noon – 10 p.m.

Through Feb. 2

Devon Ice Rink at Myriad Botanical Gardens (113 S Robinson) features daily public skating, private parties, and special events all winter long. $13, includes skate rental; $8, without; $7 for members. Monday-Thursday, 3 – 9 p.m.; Friday, 3-11 p.m.; Saturday, 11 a.m. – 11 p.m.; Sunday, noon – 7 p.m.

Dec. 19

Third Thursday at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art (415 Couch Dr) features musical performances, art activities, live entertainment and more. $12; members, free. 5 – 9 p.m.

Sounds of the Season Concert at Yukon Fine Arts Auditorium (850 Yukon Ave, Yukon) features a holiday performance by the Oklahoma City Philharmonic Orchestra. $10. 7:30 – 9 p.m.

FREE Gingerbread Challenge at the Northwest Library (5600 NW 122nd St). Compete to make and decorate the best confectionary creation. All ages welcome. Preregister. 6 – 7:30 p.m.

Dec. 19 – 20

Winter Mornings at Myriad Gardens (301 W Reno Ave). Make a natural ornament, learn about winter plants and animals at the education table, play games, read a holiday book and embark on a scavenger hunt in the Crystal Bridge and Children’s Garden. Then, make a cup of hot chocolate in the Garden Classroom and enjoy more holiday festivities. All ages welcome. Members, $6; nonmembers, $8 (1 free adult Crystal Bridge admission per paying child). 10 a.m. – noon.

Dec. 21

Parent Night Out at Artsy Learning Center (1215 36th Ave NW, Norman) features pizza, a movie, crafts and play time for kids. $35; $30 per sibling. 1 – 5 p.m.

Dec. 23 – Jan 3

Winter Break Camps at OKC Recreation Centers (various locations) features an assortment of activities that promote community involvement in recreation, cultural, health and family life. Daily snacks are included. For ages 6 – 15. $50. See website for times and locations.

Dec. 23, 27, 30 & 31, Jan. 2 & 3

Winter Break Theatre Day Camps at the Oklahoma Children’s Theatre (2501 N Blackwelder Ave) offers kids a look into theater and musical theater. For kids ages 5 – 13. $45 per day. 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. 606-7003

Dec. 23, 26, 27, 30 & 31, Jan. 2, 3 & 6

Kids Art Camps at Artsy Rose Academy (7739 W Hefner Rd) features all kinds of art fun, such as watercolor painting, drawing, mixed media and more. For ages 4-15. Please bring a sack lunch, snack and drink each day. $50 per day. 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Dec. 23 – Jan. 3

Winter Break Drop-In Activities at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum (1700 NE 63rd St) features a variety of family-friendly activities including scavenger hunts, crafts and more. Free with admission while supplies last. 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Dec. 23, 27 & 30, Jan 2,3 & 6

Schools Out Day Camps at the Oklahoma City Zoo (2000 Remington Pl) welcomes ages 4-11 to learn more about nature and their favorite animals. Snacks provided, but campers should bring their own lunch. Members, $40 per day; nonmembers, $45. 8:30 a.m. – 5:15 p.m.

Dec. 22

Winter Solstice Walk at Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center (18154 1st St, Spiro) features a guided tour of the prehistoric Native American archaeological site to discuss the powerful Caddoans who created the mounds, how they became a very important leadership group and why some of the mounds line up to solstice and equinox sunsets. Adults, $5; kids, $3. Tours are held at 11 a.m., 2 p.m. & 7 p.m.

Dec. 26 – 27 & Jan. 2 – 3

Winter Break Camps at Science Museum Oklahoma (2020 Remington Pl) features a two-day camp exploring a variety of scientific principles. For age 4 – 6th grade. Members, $45-$90; nonmembers, $50- $100. 9 a.m. – noon & 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Christmas Break Camp at the Yukon Community Center (2200 S Holly Ave, Yukon) features e games, crafts, sports and field trips. For ages 5 – 11. Preregister. Resident, $45; nonresident, $55. 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Dec. 21

Nutcracker Tea in the Kingdom of Sweets at Civic Center Music Hall (201 N Walker Ave) features treats and favorite characters from The Nutcracker. $30-$35. 4 – 6 p.m.

Dec. 23, 24, 26 & 27

Winter Break Camps at Soccer City (4520 Old Farm Rd) offers kids ages 4 – 15 a chance to enhance their soccer skills. $30-$75. 9 a.m. – noon or 1 – 4 p.m. All day option available. Also held: Dec. 30 – Jan. 2. 748-3888

Dec. 23

Holly Jolly Horse Camp at Cadence Equestrian (14150 S Pine St, Edmond) features daily horse riding lessons, horsemanship skill building and more. For ages 5-15. Preregister. $100. 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Dec. 28

FREE Eagle Watch at Lake Thunderbird State Park (1201 Clear Bay Ave, Norman) features a tour of the park to catch a glimpse of magnificent eagles in their winter home. Be sure to bring your binoculars and dress appropriately. Each eagle watch is limited, so reservations are required. 1 p.m.

Dec. 27

Thunder Youth Basketball Hustle Camps at The Link at First Moore Baptist Church (301 NE 27th St, Moore) is designed for athletes ages 6-14 years old at all skill levels. Campers will have the opportunity to play on the court of the pros, grow in the fundamentals of the game and engage in a hands-on, team-centric environment. $65. Ages 6 – 9; 8 a.m. – noon; 10 – 14, 1 – 5 p.m.

Dec. 30 – 31 & Jan. 2 – 3

Christmas Break Volleyball Camp at The Station Recreation Center (700 S Broadway Ave, Moore) teaches basic techniques to help young athletes improve their volleyball skills. For ages 7 – 14. Preregister. $55. 9 – 11 a.m.

Christmas Break Art Camp at The Station Recreation Center (700 S Broadway Ave, Moore). Create colorful paintings, sculptures, jewelry and more. For ages 6 – 12. Preregister. $55. 9 a.m. – noon.

Christmas Break Gizmos, Gadgets & Thangs Camp: Robots at The Station Recreation Center (700 S Broadway Ave, Moore). Learn to build your own robot. For ages 7 – 14. Preregister. $25. 1 – 4 p.m.

Dec. 31

Noon Year’s Eve Activities at the Oklahoma WONDERtorium (308 W Franklin Ln, Stillwater) features fun family activities suited for all ages. Free with admission. 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.

FREE Rockin’ Noon Year’s Eve Party at the Moore Library (225 S Howard Ave, Moore) features games, crafts, music and more to celebrate the last noon of 2016. 11 a.m. – noon

FREE Happy Noon Year’s Activities at the Almonte Library (2914 SW 59th St) features games, crafts and a noon-time countdown. 11 a.m. – noon.

Opening Night Finale 5K at Bicentennial Park (500 Couch Dr) takes you through downtown and back to Bicentennial Park. Participants are encouraged to dress festive. $30-$40. 3 p.m.

Opening Night at Bicentennial Park (500 Couch Dr) features evening of music, comedy, magic and fireworks at midnight to ring in the New Year. $8 in advance, $10 at the event, children under 5, FREE.7 p.m. to midnight.

New Years Eve at Oklahoma City Museum of Art (415 Couch Dr) features dinner in the Museum Café and views of the downtown fireworks from the rooftop at midnight. Prices vary. 7 p.m. – midnight.

New Year’s Eve Bash at Skate Galaxy (5800 NW 36th St) features skating, party favors, door prizes and a sparkling grape juice toast and balloon drop at midnight. All age welcome. $15. 7 p.m. – 1 a.m.

Jan. 2 – 3

Extreme Animals Christmas Break Camp at The Station Recreation Center (700 S Broadway Ave, Moore). Get up close and personal with endangered species, creepy crawlies and more to learn about different animal habitats. For ages 6 – 12. Preregister. $80. 9 a.m. – noon

Jan. 3 – 5

Eagle Watch at Arcadia Lake (9000 E 2nd, Edmond) features an information display at the park office and majestic eagles in their natural habitat. $3 per vehicle. 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Jan. 4

FREE Fishing Day at OKC Lakes & Ponds (various locations). No city permit required, however a State license is for anyone 16 and older.

Learn to Curl at Devon Ice Rink at Myriad Gardens (301 W Reno Ave). Learn the basic rules and etiquette of curling from The Oklahoma Curling Club. Dress warm and wear rubber soled shoes. Equipment provided. Preregister. For ages 10 & up. Members, $20; nonmembers, $25. 9 – 10:30 a.m.

Saturday for Kids at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum (1700 NE 63rd St) features horse-related crafts including a horseshoe picture frame, storytelling and a showing of Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron. Free with admission. 10 a.m. – noon.

Jan 6

FREE First Mondays for Kids at Sam Noble Museum (2401 Chautauqua, Norman) features complimentary admission for kids 17 years old and under on the first Monday of each month. General admission applies to guests 18 and older. Adults (18-64), $8; seniors (65+), $6; Kids (17 & under), FREE. 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
