Maintenance Tasks That Will Save You $$$ In The Long Run

Okay, so this isn’t the sexiest topic but maintenance is so critical to well… maintaining the integrity of your property! Some things are more important than others but it can be hard to differentiate what you really need to keep on top of and what you can get away with doing once a year. When something slips through the cracks (maybe literally) year after year there are potential pitfalls lying in wait that could cost you dearly. Let us remind you to not forget about these particular maintenance tasks and hopefully you’ll get to save your hard earned money in the end!

  1. Roof and gutter maintenance
    Oh, leaves in my gutter? How cute! Fall! Then BOOM, you’ve got overflowing gutters, foundation damage, and drainage issues. Don’t indulge your sentimental side here, leaves in the gutter can cost you a lot of money in the damage they can do! It’s easy to forget to do this since you probably don’t check out your roof very much. Be sure to to check out your roof too! You can have minor cracks that you probably won’t notice if you’re not looking for them. They can allow water to slowly enter into your home and cause damage to ceilings and walls which will also rack up the bill! Be sure to spend some quality time with your roof and gutters, your wallet will thank you!

  2. Creepy Crawler Critter Maintenance
    Unless you’re really alright with raccoons as roommates you might want to listen up. You’re careful… it’s not like you leave all your doors and windows open all the time and leave out bowls of cat food everywhere (to the people who identify with everything I just said… you might have raccoons). But even not doing those things can set you up with critters if you’re not being diligent about safeguarding the rest of your house. It’s easy to disregard those venty looking things sticking just slightly off your house but that’s exactly where your friendly family of squirrels will climb up in the winter time. Place mesh over vent faces and cover up any access points leading to underneath the house. Save yourself from waking up in the middle of the night to a mouse trying to make a nest in your hair and save yourself from hiring a pest control guy!

  3. Chimney Maintenance
    I doubt that chimney cleaners look like Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins anymore but nonetheless be sure to step in time and be sure to inspect your chimney and have it cleaned regularly (how about that Mary Poppins reference, huh?)! It’ll make it easier for you to spot cracks should the ever appear! If you do happen to find cracks in the bricks of the flue or there are gaps in the mortar on the outside of the chimney between the bricks, your home could be in trouble. This sort of damage could ultimately bring the chimney down on your roof if you’re not careful! That’s why regular maintenance and inspection is so important!

4 Ways To Master Spring Cleaning

I may not be one for waking up early but I’ll do it for a good old fashioned deep clean! There’s something so satisfying about scrubbing out your bathtub and seeing how absolutely gross it was before and how blindingly clean it is now! Ahhh… I’m instantly soothed just thinking about it. With the first day of spring fast approaching, what better excuse to get cracking on cleaning is there? It’s Spring cleaning season! Time to wrangle all those dust bunnies that have made their home under your couch!

I’ll admit, I can get overwhelmed when I consider all the endless possibilities of things to clean. When that happens it’s easy to get bogged down! To aid you in your quest for clean I’ve laid out a couple of sure fire things you can do right now. Here are ___ ways to master spring cleaning this year! Be sure to let us know what your tips and tricks are too! We love to hear from y’all.

1. Keep Cleaning Supplies Nearby
This may seem really obvious but hear me out: stock both your bathroom and kitchen with any cleaning supplies that you’ll need to clean that room. Fill up a cleaning caddy with these supplies and wash rags/dusters to spare yourself a little extra time and energy by not running back and fourth getting what you need from other rooms!

2. Coffee Filter Clean
We don’t doubt that you have paper towels to use for this but we recommend trying coffee filters instead to clean mirrors and faucets. Weird, right? But they’re lint free and take up hardly any space when you fold them up. You’ll get an amazing streakless shine and no little left over lint hairs either! Plus, coffee filters last for like 20 years at a time if you’re only using them to actually make coffee.

3. Organize Under Your Sink
“I’ve tried that!” or “I’m doing that already!” no, we mean like pimp it out under there. Throw a lazy Susan under (we only want good work ethic Susan up here, SUSAN) there for your cleaning supplies that you don’t use every time you clean. Add some stick on hooks for your rubber gloves and regular cleanser so you have easy access to them!  The crown jewel of your under the sink space is the tap light or motion sensor light. You can buy these cheap and easily stick them to the inside of the cabinet so you have an easier time deciphering what is what down there.

4. Store Effectively
My kitchen is pretty dang small. Hey, I’m not complaining! It’s just a fact that I have hardly any room to store plates or pans. I’ve had to get creative with how I keep these things and get the most out of the space I have. Spring is the perfect time to reorganize your kitchen the way you’ve been wanting! Begin by turning one shelf into two! Wire shelf risers are cheap and help you take full advantage of vertical room in a cupboard that was not being used before! Another gadget that is totally helpful is a pan rack. These neat little guys allow you to put your pans into a cupboard on their side so you can fit more and don’t have to stack them!

What? I thought this was a real estate blog? Don’t worry- you’re still in the right place! Here around the Red Team office we have a couple of beautiful, glowing mamas-to-be! We figured this blog is a timely tribute to our baby mamas as they prepare for their new roommate to move out and in and might be helpful to any other expecting readers. If that’s you- I’m sure you’ve already begun or considered the process of baby proofing and have come to realize that these safety precautions you’re taking are U-G-L-Y YOU AIN’T GOT NOW ALIBI. So, here’s our take on how you can keep your little cutie safe without sacrificing your totally chic home. Let us know if you’re trying any of these out or what worked for you!

DIY - Get a pallet, foam, table legs, fabric and a staple gun.

I probably spend most of my time in my living room when I’m at home. It’s cozy, decorated just how I like, and it’s where people tend to congregate! Perfect for the whole family- except for babies. Unless, you intend to keep your little one on a leash like they do at Disneyland (hey- no judgement) you might need to consider what you’re going to do about your coffee table. The solution to those pointy and hard edges is to substitute them with a large, padded ottoman. If anything you can only incorporate more style into your space with a fun fabric… just know it might get juice spilled on it eventually.


Speaking of juice stains… this one’s more for the ladies with the white couches than for the babies with the juice. White couches are amazing. The end. They can pretty much only exist as a white couch, though, if you only look at them and never touch or breathe on them. For those braver than me- here’s a tip on protecting or salvaging your white couch from baby spit up and leaky diapers. Once again, it comes down to the fabric: buy a beautiful piece of fabric and have it made into a fitted sheet cover for over your cushions. The best part about this is you can change them out with different colors whenever you feel like it and it makes for easy washing!

Now, I hate to say it… but those beautiful brass candlesticks you have out there? Or that amazing antique vase sitting on your death trap- I mean coffee table?  I’m sure you already know this but for the people in the back: babies shouldn’t be around hard, or pointy, or fragile things. You don’t want to see those precious items destroyed and you most certainly don’t want your baby to be around broken glass. Swap those things out for light, safe, and natural materials that can even be played with! Unless your sweet baby has hulk like strength, you shouldn’t have to worry too much about your cute, new wooden bowl being smashed.
